Divorces of couples over 50 are increasing and present an array of complex issues that do not affect the dissolution of younger couples.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2019, marriage and divorce rates are decreasing, with the marriage rate dropping from 8.2 per 1,000 people in 2000 to 6.1 in 2019, and the divorce rate dropping from 4.0 in 2000 to 2.7. However, the divorce rate for older people doubled from five per 1,000 married persons in 1990 to 10 per 1,000 in 2015.
