We all want to get back to our normal lives. For most, that means getting back to work, kids in school, shopping, going to restaurants and doing all the basic things we once took for granted. But in order to do that, we will need to feel confident that the places where we work, shop and eat are actually safe. Before there is an effective vaccine or treatments that are so effective that infection is no longer a concern, that means implementing measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Rather than focusing on how to keep us safe, some elected officials are again using this as an opportunity to provide another gift to corporations and insurance companies at the expense of employees and consumers. As we have this national conversation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Sen. Mitch McConnell are demanding that corporations be given complete immunity from legal claims even where they are failing to act reasonably to limit COVID-19 exposure. This is the exact opposite of what our leaders in Washington should be doing. No person should have to choose between their health and safety versus their livelihood.
