The role of an in-house counsel in diversity, equity and inclusion does not simply stop at discussing discrimination laws with a company’s human resources department—general counsel should rather redefine their mission to proactively address inclusiveness.

General counsel can play a critical strategic role in advising senior leadership how to effectively implement “systemic change” in an organization to benefit DEI initiative, two GCs said in a Wednesday discussion at ALM’s Women Influence & Power in Law conference in Washington, D.C. Karyn A. Temple, global general counsel at the Motion Picture Association, and Simone Wu, general counsel at Choice Hotels, outlined their vision of a much broader in-house counsel role.
