Clyde & Co has announced plans to open two offices in Australia with partners recruited from Allens.

The British firm will open in Sydney and Perth in October. Former Allens insurance practice head John Edmond will join the firm in Sydney along with fellow insurance partners Dean Carrigan and Oscar Shub. Former Allens litigation partner Jenny Thornton will join Clyde & Co in Perth.

The firm says its new Australian practice will be mainly focused on disputes, particularly those in the insurance sector. Clyde & Co, which merged last year with Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, is most well-known for its shipping and insurance practices.

In addition to the Australian hires, Clyde & Co also added a number of Allens partners in Hong Kong and Singapore. Simon McConnell, former head of Allens’ Hong Kong disputes practice, and partner Mun Yeow, will join Clyde & Co’s Hong Kong office. The Singapore office will welcome Matthew Skinner, who used to lead Allens disputes practice in that city, and corporate partner Ian Stewart.

The new Hong Kong partners will bolster an office that saw all of the former Barlow Lyde partners and several associates depart last spring.

The moves come a few months after Allens entered into an exclusive alliance with Magic Circle firm Linklaters. In a statement, Allens managing partner Michael Rose said his firm had made a conscious decision to exit its Asia insurance practice and transition to a higher-end corporate practice that would better mesh with that of Linklaters.
