Singaporean firm Allen & Gledhill has opened an office in Myanmar.

Partner Minn Naing Oo has relocated from Singapore to lead the office, which launched in Yangon on Feb. 4. Three other lawyers, including two Myanmar-qualified attorneys, will work with Oo.

Myanmar-born Oo was recruited by Allen & Gledhill last April from the Singapore International Arbitration Center, where he was chief executive officer. Qualified in Singapore and New York, he was brought on specifically to launch a practice focused on that market.

Oo spent five years at the SIAC, moving over from Singapore’s Ministry of Trade & Industry in 2002.* He worked as an associate at Rajah & Tann prior to joining the ministry.

The Yangon office was set up as an associate firm, Allen & Gledhill (Myanmar) Co. Ltd. Allen & Gledhill launched a similar associate firm in Laos last year. Both launches were driven by client demand for legal services in these markets, the firm said in a statement.

*Correction, 2/26/14: A previous version of this story mistated that Minn Naing Oo had worked at the Singapore International Arbitration Center for six years rather than five. Also, the previous version had said he started at the SIAC and then moved to Singapore’s Ministry of Trade & Industry. In fact, he worked at the ministry first and then moved to the SIAC. We regret the errors.
