Australian firm HWL Ebsworth has recruited five new partners across the country.

Andrew Shearwood is joining HWL Ebsworth’s Perth office from Herbert Smith Freehills, where he was a partner advising on investment funds, mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets deals in a range of industries. He joined the former Freehills over three decades ago and had been a partner there for 27 years. With the addition of Shearwood, HWL Ebsworth now has 30 lawyers, including 10 partners.

In Sydney, former Clayton Utz partner Paul Gatward is joining HWL Ebsworth as a partner in the banking and finance practice. He represents clients on major financing transactions, as well as debt restructurings. A lawyer at Clayton Utz for the past 19 years, he was promoted to partner in 2007.

Two insurance partners are also joining HWL Ebsworth’s Sydney office. Scott Hay and David Andersen, both previously with Piper Alderman, typically advise insurers and self-insured organizations on asbestos claims, workers’ compensation matters and public liability claims. Hay had been with Piper Alderman since 2002 and a partner since 2004. Andersen joined Piper Alderman as a partner in 2008 from Church & Grace, where he was a partner. The firm’s Sydney office has 221 lawyers, including 75 partners.

New Brisbane partner Andrew Cheetham is also joining HWL Ebsworth’s insurance practice. He was previously with Cooper Grace Ward, where he acted for insurers on various disputes. A partner at Cooper Grace Ward since 2009, he was also previously a partner at TressCox for two years.

The firm’s Brisbane office now has 101 lawyers, including 26 partners. HWL Ebsworth has about 500 lawyers, including 173 partners, in its six offices in Australia.
