Jones Day has announced it is opening an office in Perth.

The U.S. firm has recruited former Allens partner Stephen McComish to lead the new office, which is expected to open in April. McComish is a litigator who focuses on matters in the construction, engineering, mining and oil and gas sectors.

He first joined the former Allens Arthur Robinson as a partner in 2004 through that firm’s merger with Perth construction law firm Hollingdales, where he had worked for six years and been a partner for the last four years.

Perth is the capital of Australia’s mining industry and a major center for the energy industry as well. Foreign investment in those sectors, especially from China, has led many international law firms to open offices there.

The office is Jones Day’s second in Australia. The firm opened in Sydney in 1998, where it now has about 40 lawyers, including 13 partners. Worldwide, Jones Day has around 2,400 lawyers in 40 offices.
