Reed Smith partner Jesse Miller is the first person ever to confess to me that he had used our scheduled interview time as an excuse to sneak off to a quiet place for a quick nap. 

“Well, I’m an infantryman. So we sleep anywhere and whenever we can,” said Miller after I roused the citizen-soldier in the California Army National Guard late last week. Colonel Miller, as most folks refer to him these days, is currently deployed as the deputy commander of Joint Task Force Domestic Support, a combined Army and Air National Guard effort to support the state’s efforts to fight COVID-19 and the wildfires raging throughout the state.
