Theodore "Ted" Simon, a criminal defense lawyer and principal in the Law Offices of Theodore Simon in Philadelphia, was elected president-elect of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Simon was installed July 27 at NACDL's annual meeting in San Francisco.

Simon has been a criminal defense attorney in Philadelphia for 39 years, where he has a local, national and international trial and appellate practice.


Ballard Spahr litigator Daniel JT McKenna was selected to receive the 2013 Sandra Day O'Connor Award for Professional Service by the American Inns of Court.

The annual award honors an American Inns of Court member in practice for 10 or fewer years for excellence in public interest or pro bono activities.

The award is scheduled to be presented October 19 at the annual American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence at the U.S. Supreme Court, which will be hosted by Justice Elena Kagan.

McKenna is a member of Ballard Spahr's litigation department and its consumer financial services, privacy and data security, and mortgage banking groups.


James P. Duffy IV joined K&L Gates as a partner in the international arbitration practice.

Duffy has experience developing global dispute resolution strategies for clients, such as power companies, investment banks, trading companies and government entities, among others, in multijurisdictional international disputes.


Louis W. Fryman, a partner at Conrad O'Brien, spoke about law firm growth and management to the attorneys at Mitchell, Williams, Selig, Gates & Woodyard.

Fryman focuses his practice on arbitration, mediation and alternative dispute resolution.

Brian J. McCormick Jr. of Sheller P.C. presented "The False Claims Act — Beyond Pharmaceutical Cases" at the 66th annual Melvin M. Belli Society seminar on July 19 in San Francisco.

McCormick discussed recent trends in pursuit of False Claims Act and whistleblower claims in health care, government contracts and financial fraud sectors.
