Morgan R. “Dick” Jones, who served as chairman of Drinker Biddle & Reath for 11 years, died Friday morning at the age of 71 after a brief battle with pneumonia.

Jones served as chairman from 1989 to 2000, but for a two-year period where he stepped down for health reasons. In 2000, he handed over the reins to Jim Sweet. Jones was the first partner to have operational authority over the entire firm, moving it from one run by a management committee to one with a chairman at the helm. At the time of his death, Jones was of counsel with the firm and still actively involved in the practice of law, leading the intellectual property group for the past two years.
