January is a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. This includes toting up the past year’s wins and losses, evaluating finances, and thinking about success. Was it a successful year? Will the next year be successful? How we answer these questions depends on our goals. For most of us, our main goals as lawyers include making enough money to support ourselves and our families, getting superior results for our clients, and being happy at our jobs on a regular basis.

Achieving these goals can be challenging. We cannot ensure success in the practice of law, but if we follow some basic precepts beyond the obvious (work hard, be honest and think creatively) we can maximize our chances of success. Here are seven guidelines, none of which are original to me, that if followed can maximize the chances for success.
