You may be asking yourself: What’s the big deal with voting laws that require ID verification? Everyone has ID, so what’s the issue?

Though it may be surprising to the many of us with government-issued identification, not everyone in the United States has an ID, and for many there can be significant obstacles to obtaining an ID. Acquiring the correct ID can be a very serious challenge, and as an ID can be a gateway to voting, banking and other necessary rights or systems, there needs to be a broader understanding, or at least an appreciation, of how difficult it can be to get an ID. If this difficulty is not recognized, we risk harming low-income and other citizens who cannot obtain an ID without legal assistance.
