Fall daylight savings time can be difficult for many of us who find ourselves working before the sun rises and working well past the sun sets. Daylight savings time was first introduced in Europe and the United States after World War I to decrease the use of fuel for lighting and heating by providing extra evening daylight in the summer and extra morning daylight in the winter. We no longer have these post-war restrictions, but continue to “fall back” each November. Traditionally, this change of time and season has also been an occasion to set new personal and professional goals as we enter fall and quickly thereafter winter. With that in mind, consider some of these ideas to reset your personal and professional ambitions this season:

  • Participate in a charitable campaign.

The fall and winter can be especially difficult for vulnerable members of our communities. Consider starting a collection for cold weather clothing items in your office. Socks, hats, gloves, thermal underwear and boots are always needed by charitable organizations. Many organizations already have established drives, which would make it easy for your office to participate. You could also facilitate volunteering at a food pantry or food kitchen. These activities can help you get to know your co-workers better while helping others.

  • Plan a charitable event for the spring.
