One of U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis’ final decisions before leaving the bench for a job at Fish & Richardson on May 18 was something he probably didn’t want to do. He slapped three Texas patent lawyers with $451,381 in total sanctions for filing frivolous pleadings.

Davis’ May 4 sanctions order against plaintiff counsel in Raylon v. Complus Data Innovations was two-and-a-half years in the making. He ultimately ordered D. Scott Hemingway of Dallas’ Hemingway & Hansen to pay $352,486 to the defendants in the case. He also ordered Dallas attorney Corby Bell to pay $70,065 and Marshall attorney Carl Roth to pay $28,829.
