The traditional nuclear family, with the husband as the breadwinner and the wife as the homemaker, is a stereotype that’s seen in television sitcoms from the 1950s. Today, that dichotomy has been replaced by a partnership, where households have two working parents, each contributing to the family income and each sharing in parenting. In this article, we share our experiences as parents in our respective families, while also continuing our associate careers at Chamberlain Hrdlicka.

Paid Family Leave

As Congress and President Joe Biden debate whether paid parental leave should be a right and not a privilege, most attorneys have the benefit of some paid parental leave, or the bargaining power to contract for such. An associate thinking of making a lateral move—and thinking of starting a family—should review potential firms’ parental leave policies. It’s also imperative to gain an understanding of the firm’s culture as it relates to parental leave policies—are firms supporting attorneys and encouraging them to take their full leave or will they feel pressured to return before their allotted leave has concluded?
