For New Jersey firms and offices that have stayed faithful to their summer associate programs in the recession’s wake, such hiring remains a desirable recruiting tool, though there doesn’t appear to be signs of a return to the days of large classes.

Among 17 bellwether firms and offices, there were a total of 78 hires: a 8.3 percent increase from last year. That’s a healthy uptick by percentage but essentially flat considering that, in the mid-2000s, New Jersey summer associate ranks eclipsed 140 every year and a greater number of firms were hosting programs.
