The survivors of a woman who was struck and killed by a trash truck while crossing the street agreed to a $6 million settlement in their wrongful death suit in Essex County, Estate of Aguilar Andrade v. DeJesus, on April 26.

Ximena Alexandra Aguilar Andrade was crossing Washington Avenue in Belleville on Jan. 27, 2021, when she was hit by a trash truck that was owned by Interstate Waste Services Inc. and driven by Juan A. DeJesus. The truck was turning right onto Washington Avenue from a side street when it hit Aguilar Andrade in a crosswalk. DeJesus claimed he never saw her, according to plaintiff lawyer Kathleen Reilly of Brady, Reilly & Cardoso in Kearney. Aguilar Andrade, 43, was alive for about eight minutes before she was declared dead at the scene, according to Reilly.
