When E. Joshua Rosenkranz founded Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe’s appellate practice seven years ago, he wanted a diverse set of cases beyond just high-tech patents. “We didn’t want to be pigeon-holed as just the patent appellate firm, or just financial services, so we’ve self-consciously built a profile in multiple areas,” he said.

In the past year, some of the group’s biggest wins have come in other areas such as copyright law. In July 2014, Rosenkranz won in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for Dish Network Corp. in the latest preliminary-injunction challenge brought by the broadcast networks over technologies that skip commercials and stream shows. He fought off comparisons to the U.S. Supreme Court’s earlier ruling in American Broadcasting Cos. v. Aereo Inc.
