The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s parent agency threw its support behind a March amendment to a pending Senate patent reform bill, including provisions to allow the PTO to set fees and a process for challenging issued patents.

On April 20, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke sent a letter to Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the sponsor of the the pending bill, supporting March 4 changes to it, known as the “Manager’s Amendment.” The Senate Judiciary Committee reported an earlier version of the Patent Reform Act of 2009, S.515, out of committee in April 2009.
