William Kovacic has held several positions at the Federal Trade Commission, most significantly as the agency’s chair from March 2008 to May 2009. He also served as the FTC’s general counsel from June 2001 to December 2004.

He was a staff attorney with the Planning Office in the FTC’s Bureau of Competition from September 1979 through 1982.  He then served as attorney adviser to Commissioner George Douglas from January 1983 to August 1983.
