The head of an international energy think tank who was supposed to be the House Republicans’ star witness on collusion between China and President Joe Biden has been charged with acting as an unregistered agent for China.

In an indictment unsealed late Monday, Gal Luft, co-director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, was charged with making false statements, arms trafficking and failing to register as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Republicans have claimed the charges, signed off by a grand jury in the Southern District of New York, are an attempt to silence a political opponent.
