One year ago today, the Taliban took over Afghanistan. The images endure: Afghans desperately trying to climb aboard planes, women donning burkas after decades of freedom, a helicopter hovering over the abandoned U.S. embassy.

Amid these tragic circumstances were acts of heroism, courage and persistence. The United States evacuated nearly 80,000 Afghans, thanks to the sacrifices and dedication of on-the-ground military personnel and civil servants. Pro bono lawyers also jumped in, working every angle to help Afghans trying to flee. Lawyers from across the United States then pivoted to help those Afghans who safely arrived in our country.
