During Tuesday’s final argument of the U.S. Supreme Court term, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. used his first question to the U.S. Justice Department’s lawyer to probe how the Biden administration has decided whether to change a prior Trump-era legal position and advance a new stance.

Roberts raised his observations in a key sentencing dispute that could determine whether low-level crack prisoners are eligible for reduced terms.
