Tell us about your top U.S. Supreme Court or federal appeals court victory over the past year and how you and your team achieved the win.

In July, we won from the U.S. Supreme Court a unanimous stay of a potentially crippling nationwide injunction of a general Clean Water Act permit for utility lines, which include oil and gas pipelines. Given the extraordinary nature and expedited consideration of stay requests, we believe success in the court’s so-called shadow docket requires even more care and discipline than usual in choosing only the most compelling issues. That victory was our second involving the Clean Water Act; earlier in the year, we persuaded the court to vacate the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit’s judgment in County of Maui v. Hawai’i Wildlife Fund.
