An appeals court on Monday cemented a defense win for a coalition of data storage companies facing patent infringement claims from a subsidiary of the patent licensing company Acacia Research Corporation. In a summary order, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed a lower court ruling that a patent held by Acacia unit Compression Technology Solutions LLC was invalid.

Durie Tangri’s Clement Roberts argued the case at the Federal Circuit for all three defendants: EMC Corporation, NetApp Inc., and Quantum Corporation. Durie Tangri was on the briefs for Quantum, while EMC turned to Ropes & Gray and NetAPP had Pepper Hamiltion. CTS was represented by Paul Lesko of Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides & Barnerd in Alton, Ill.
