Speed may cost organizations who take a knee-jerk approach to data breaches. Last week, the global intelligence alliance Five Eyes released a joint cybersecurity advisory and among the top mistakes listed includes mitigating affected systems before responders can protect and recover data.

To be sure, there are advantages to a more deliberate approach that provides forensic or cybersecurity experts time to map out the full extent of a network infiltration without escalating the situation too quickly. But legal departments may also have to weigh the potential consequences, such as regulators who won’t look kindly on a slow and steady mentality in the face of a breach.
