Family of mechanic fatally struck in head gets $5.2 million

On June 17, the family of an aviation mechanic who died after he was struck in the head by a cabin door recovered $5.2 million. In 2008, Larry Hagerman attempted to open the cockpit door of a recently landed Hawker Beechcraft Model B200 King Air Aircraft. The door opened explosively, causing massive head trauma. He died 18 days later. Plaintiffs’ counsel argued that the depressurization system for the plane was defectively designed because there was no warning system to alert pilots that the cabin was still pressured. Plaintiff’s counsel also argued that pilot Albert Sidaras failed to depressurize the cabin or warn Hagerman that the cabin was still pressurized.
