On Feb. 2, a jury awarded $332,735 to a bicyclist who claimed that she fell after striking a rebar protruding from a section of roadway that was repaired by the Texas Department of Transportation. Robyn Womac claimed that she was ejected from her bicycle and came to rest 50 feet away, resulting in a fractured collarbone and road-rash burns to her right shoulder and torso. She underwent three surgeries to repair the collarbone. Womac claimed that the end of the rebar was inadequately attached to the road surface, causing it to become unfastened. The award was reduced to $250,000 by a statutory cap.
