In August, San Marcos solo O.L. Knutson filed a subrogation petition in Travis County on behalf of an insurer seeking to recover damages from Cameron County residents in connection with an automobile accident that occurred in Cameron County. In November, Travis County Court-at-Law No. 2 Judge Eric Shepperd assessed $1,000 in sanctions against Knutson for signing and filing a subrogation petition in the wrong county. In the order, the judge found that Knutson knowingly had signed and filed a number of subrogation petitions in Travis County that involved automobile accidents that occurred in South Texas, against defendants who primarily reside in South Texas.
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid staff attorney Robert Doggett, who represents defendants Mario Carlos Flores, Esperanza Flores and Antonio Betancourt in Texas Association of Counties Workers’ Compensation Self-Insurance Fund v. Flores, et al., says he received a check from Knutson on Nov. 29 to pay the sanction.
