On Aug. 11, a judge awarded $507,500 to a woman who lived in fear after she was beaten by a man. Last May, Sue Ann Dean Funk filed a complaint with police alleging that she had been assaulted by Alva Fowler. Fowler was subsequently arrested and convicted on assault charges. Funk claimed that Fowler assaulted her without provocation and during his arrest made verbal threats that he would hurt her again. She sustained severe facial bruising that was still visible more than two months after the alleged assault, and claimed the threats caused her emotional distress.
