Editor’s note: The day a lawyer makes partner in a firm is a red-letter date in a career. Here’s what seven new partners in large firms in Texas have to say about how they learned about their partner promotion, who they called first and how they celebrated.

While waiting to learn if he would be elected partner in Baker Botts, Danny David, a litigator in Houston, says he used his best sleuthing skills to predict when the firm would make the announcement. David says he knew the firm traditionally chooses and announcesnew partners in October, and he researched firm announcements from past years so he could know when to expect to learn his fate. Even with that in mind, David says he was “completely surprised” on the morning of Oct. 19, 2009, when he was summoned to managing partner Walt Smith’s office. David says he wasn’t the only one; other associates up for partner were there, too. “When I saw my colleagues who also made partner assembled in the office, I felt I was either going to get good news, or I had the nucleus of a really good boutique,” David quips. However, they all got good news from the firm that day, he says. David says his first call was of course to his wife, Isabel, who “has been with me for the long duration of this trip.” He graduated from Harvard Law School in 2000. During that week, David says he and his wife enjoyed several celebratory dinners with Baker Botts partners.
