With the crowded field of Republicans vying for seats on the Texas Supreme Court this primary season, their campaigns will need all the cash they can get. But this year, most judicial candidates are spending the funds in new ways, relying on social media and other electronic communications in addition to direct mail and radio advertising.

According to reports filed Jan. 15 with the Texas Ethics Commission that detail campaign contributions and expenditures for the last six months of 2009, a dozen candidates running for Place 3, 5 and 9 on the Texas Supreme Court reported a total of about $1.06 million in contributions with the nine Republican candidates in those races receiving about $1.02 million of that total and the three Democratic candidates receiving roughly $43,270.
