As we near the end of a sour economic year, legal staffers are wondering whether they will receive bonuses and whether office parties will go forward as usual. To be sure, the stock market has entered a tentative recovery and new unemployment claims have leveled off, but the downsizing and austerity measures many firms implemented this year were long overdue. Thus, no improvement in the country’s financial outlook should prevent firms from continuing in the sober tone already established for 2009: Employees are fortunate to have jobs and have no business expecting fringe benefits such as bonuses, holiday parties or honesty.

The holiday season offers several opportunities for unequivocal reinforcement of the new reality.
