I have held many different jobs in my 28 years, ranging from a babysitter to an adult education teacher, with a potpourri of positions sprinkled in between. However, no experience prepared me for my first year of practice quite like the years I spent as a waitress.

I worked most of my waitressing years at a now-defunct barbeque joint called Red River Barbeque and Grille. I learned many lessons during those years slinging sliced brisket and ribs that have allowed me to make a comfortable transition from law student to lawyer. First, the customer service skills that are necessary to be a successful waitress have translated into having successful client interactions and relationships. Second, the sales acumen honed while serving tables has allowed me to feel comfortable marketing my practice and developing new business. Third, the ability to manage a multitude of tables has enabled me to multi-task in my day-to-day legal practice.
