Late last month, the Pennsylvania Court of Judicial Discipline issued two orders officially removing former Luzerne County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael T. Toole and former Superior Court Judge Michael T. Joyce from the bench and barring both men from ever holding judicial office in the state again.

While these orders may seem like mere formalities, given that Toole and Joyce are both convicted felons, several attorneys and legal watchers said the CJD’s decisions serve several important functions.
