The complex legal issues defense contractor Raytheon Co. faces are staggering. It operates in one of the most highly regulated areas in the United States, under the eye of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the National Security Agency. It does business in 85 countries, meaning it interacts with the U.S. State Department and heightened U.S. Department of Justice enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
So the in-house legal team, led by general counsel Jay Stephens, puts the emphasis on compliance and on taking a leadership role in developing the business. "It is important to have a seat at the table, to be able to influence and impact outcomes," Stephens said. "To move beyond sound advice and good judgment, and achieve execution of good policies and practices."
