For the first time, general counsel can consider data on how two kinds of specialty software relate to staffing and spending benchmarks. Counterintuitively, departments with the software show worse benchmarks. This article describes the research, addresses some methodology points and concludes with some possible explanations.

• Law department set. The research started with a large set of North American law departments grouped according to the presence or absence of two kinds of software. As of mid-June, General Counsel Met­rics LLC had collected data from 138 law departments (19 Canadian) of companies that reported 2011 revenue above $250 million. They averaged 29 lawyers (median: 9), total legal spend of $25 million (median: $4 million) and revenue of $7.8 billion (median: $2.7 billion).
