Online retailers, including goliaths Amazon.com, eBay and Expedia, are putting up a fight against states eager to collect taxes from booming Internet sales. This month New York became the first state to require "e-tailers" to collect and remit sales tax. California considered similar legislation this year, but failed. Legislators in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Minnesota are also considering the idea of passing laws that would allow them to collect sales taxes from online retailers.
