Update: This article originally misreported that law students are limited to $138,000 in federal loans. It has been corrected to reflect that the limit applies only to Stafford loans. Law students may borrow the full amount of their educational costs under the federal Graduate PLUS loan program, which carries higher interest rates.

A book’s publication is usually cause for excitement for the author. At least it was the first six times Washington University in St. Louis School of Law professor Brian Tamanaha’s work went into print. His latest effort, a systematic critique of American law schools and the declining value of the degrees they proffer, is dredging up a very different emotion: trepidation.
