Copyright holding company Righthaven lacks legal standing to sue political satire site DemocraticUnderground.com, a U.S. District Court judge in Nevada ruled Tuesday, in a decision that may hinder Righthaven’s hundreds of similar suits nationwide.

Chief District Judge Roger L. Hunt said it is “flagrantly false — to the point that the claim is disingenuous, if not outright deceitful” for Righthaven to assert that it has sufficient rights from Las Vegas Review-Journal owner Stephens Media to sue alleged copyright violators, and that Righthaven has two weeks to explain to the court why it should not be sanctioned.
