SAN FRANCISCO — Home to blockbuster litigation, busy labor and employment practices and rebounding corporate work, California emerged as a bright spot in the 2012 legal market.

Nearly all of The Recorder 25 — top-grossing firms with at least a fifth of their lawyers in the state — managed to log at least a small increase in gross revenue from the previous year. At least part of that can be chalked up to the state’s booming tech and life sciences sectors. Those industries throw off lots of legal work, and a good portion of it — including high-stakes IP litigation, M&A and IPOs — commands high rates. "That makes the market very attractive," law firm consultant Kent Zimmermann said.
