SACRAMENTO — A little more than a year ago, Kate Anderson, the mother of twin girls, was leading a campaign to open a child care center in her law firm’s downtown Los Angeles office.

These days, the Munger, Tolles & Olson associate is politicking for a broader cause. Anderson, now on leave from the firm, is a Democratic candidate in the highly competitive race for California’s 53rd Assembly District, a skinny swath of coastal area that includes the cities of Torrance and Redondo Beach and parts of Los Angeles.
