The Third Appellate District affirmed a judgment of sentence. The court held that a criminal conviction assessment was properly imposed as part of the sentence for a conviction which occurred after the authorizing statute took effect, even though the underlying criminal conduct took place prior to the statute’s effective date.

In 2007, Miguel Castillo stole a victim’s truck at gunpoint. He was tried before a jury and, in 2009, was convicted of carjacking. As part of his sentence, Castillo was ordered to pay a $30 criminal conviction assessment.
