SAN FRANCISCO — Orrick will keep starting salaries at $160,000 under the firm’s new merit-based promotion system, the firm said Thursday.

After their first year, associates will make between $160,000 and $170,000 with the possibility of a bonus 5 percent above market. The middle tier in the new hierarchy, “managing associates,” will make between $185,000 to $205,000, with a bonus of up to 10 percent above market. “Senior associates” will make between $235,000 and $250,000, with a bonus up to 15 percent above what other firms are paying.
