It is well known that partners in law firms owe duties to their clients. However, partners can also owe contractual and ethical duties to their firms or partnerships. A law firm partner who fails to recognize or comply with their obligations to their partnerships can face a risk of a bar grievance or even a partnership dispute.

Indeed, a Colorado attorney was recently disciplined for moonlighting as local counsel for a Kansas law firm and not disclosing that work to her co-partners at her Colorado firm. Among other things, the court explained that the attorney’s failure to disclose the work to her co-partners clearly violated her firm’s partnership agreement.
