Two Broward County general magistrates and five South Florida prosecutors are among 36 applicants vying to fill the two county court seats vacated by Judges Joseph A. Murphy and Edward Merrigan Jr.
Murphy is retiring, and Merrigan was appointed to the circuit bench.
The applicant list, released by the Broward Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission on Tuesday, includes General Magistrates Phoebee Francois and Vicki Plant.
The Broward prosecutors who applied are Mari Blumstein, Kal La Var Evans, Andrew Newman and Stephen Zaccor. A fifth prosecutor listed is Abbe Rifkin of the Miami-Dade state attorney’s office.
Other government attorneys are Susan Odzer Hugentugler, a Broward circuit staff attorney; James Rubin, a Broward assistant public defender; Douglas Harrison, a Hollywood city staff attorney; Donald Gelin, a Broward sheriff’s staff attorney; and Haccord J. Curry Jr. at the state Department of Juvenile Justice in Fort Lauderdale.
Other public sector or social service attorneys include Phyllis W. Kotey, a law professor at Florida International University in Miami; Derrick Roberts, ChildNet corporate counsel in Plantation; and David Barkey with the Anti-Defamation League in Boca Raton.
Private attorneys include law firm partners Doreen Inkeles at Beiner Inkeles & Horvitz in Boca Raton, Thomas Oates at Oates & Oates in Pompano Beach and Rosa Romero at Barreto & Romero in Miami.
Other Fort Lauderdale applicants are Daniel Kanner at Bauman Kanner; Michele McCaul Ricca at Boyd Richards Parker & Colonelli; Richard Sachs at Berman, Kean & Riguera; Maxine Streeter at Conrad & Scherer; and Gerard Williams at Nichols Williams & Julian.
Solo practitioners in the running are Monique Brochu, Ernest Kollra, Chris Narducci, Rhoda Nelson, Stefanie Moon and Jason Allen Rosner, all of Fort Lauderdale; Charlie B. Levy of Miami; Samuel D. Lopez of Pembroke Pines; and Natalie Knight-Tai of Coconut Creek.
Mark Rickard, a civil litigator in Plantation, applied and is on the ballot as a challenger to incumbent County Court Judge Ellen Feld.
Keathan Frink, an associate at Beckham & Beckham in Miami, applied.
Two applicants, Michael Berstein and Jose Hurtado, were not listed with the Florida Bar.
Interviews will be held May 30 at the Broward County Bar Association offices beginning at 10 a.m. and are open to the public.
