Keeping track of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s rulings and trends is key for any attorney practicing labor law. A group of Littler Mendelson lawyers recently unveiled their annual report on EEOC developments. The report examines the agency’s continued efforts to implement its strategic enforcement plan for 2012–16, including the focus on systemic cases involving a “pattern or practice, policy and/or class cases where the alleged discrimination has a broad impact on an industry, profession, company or geographic location.”

The report is divided into five sections that review the EEOC’s fiscal-year activities:

  • Part I: As the 50th anniversary of Title VII approaches, the attorneys examine pivotal developments tied to the agency’s enforcement authority, especially the evolution of Title VII’s statutory framework and key case developments relating to the growth of “pattern or practice” and class-type litigation.
  • Part II: An overview of EEOC charge activity, litigation and settlements over the past year, emphasizing the types and location of lawsuits filed by the commission.
  • Part III: A review of key regulatory developments during fiscal year 2013, including areas in which the EEOC plans to devote attention over the next year.
  • Part IV: A look at EEOC investigations and subpoena enforcement actions, particularly instances where the court granted the EEOC broad authority to conduct class-type investigations.
  • Part V: Key court cases are highlighted, addressing a wide variety of topics.
