For years, alternative fee arrangements (AFAs) have promised to upend the legal industry’s traditional hourly billing model. And for years, that promise has gone largely unfulfilled. Corporate law departments routinely request AFA proposals but ultimately reject them, defaulting to the familiar hourly billing. According to newly released results from the 15th Annual Law Department Operations Survey, only 31% of law department operations professionals say their law department is somewhat or very effective on AFAs, while 47% say they are somewhat or very ineffective. And only 35% say their law firms do a good job at suggesting AFAs that meet their needs.
