Sharon Barner, the general counsel of Columbus, Indiana-based Cummins Inc., will become its chief administrative officer in April, according to an announcement in an SEC filing Tuesday.  Her move strengthens the recent trend of legal leaders taking executive roles outside of the legal department.

Barner, who has served as general counsel since January 2012, will take over for Marya Rose when she retires. Rose has served as chief administrative officer of the global energy technology company since 2011.
