Legal consultancy Altman Weil reported on Friday that the number of law firm mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. this year slightly outpaces last year’s record for the first three quarters.

The 22 U.S. law firm mergers announced during the third quarter boosts the total number of combinations in 2014 to 62, compared with 58 in the same period of 2013. The 88 total tie-ups announced last year far surpassed the previous high of 70 reached in 2008. Altman Weil began tracking mergers in the first quarter of 2007.
